Something you were definitely told not to do when you were a child but an essential movement to stop them from stiffening up. I am amazed when I get home from a busy day slaving over a hot computer how tight my upper back and shoulders have become. The simple movement of lifting your shoulders up to your ears and then gently releasing them helps keep tight muscles at bay. To enhance that movement even more as you lift your shoulders breathe in and as you relax your shoulders breathe out and imagine you have two buckets of heavy water in your hands and see how much further your shoulders relax. As well as benefitting your muscles it is also tremendous to do after a difficult telephone call or complex piece of work you are literally shrugging off the stress!! Try it next time you feel those back muscles seizing up!
I was fortunate to be in the Highlands of Scotland over the last week and I thought I’d share with you this beautiful photograph of stunning scenery. I love being in the mountains, it broadens your horizons and the air is fantastic. You don’t need to go on a 9 hour car journey however to benefit from being outside even just for 5 minutes in a busy day. It changes your perspective and you come back to your desk with a clearer view of what you need to do for the rest of the day. I am terrible at leaving the office in the middle of the day but always feel better when I have!
So shrug those shoulders, take a deep breath and look outside. It will be worth it!!
